I’ve been writing songs since my early teens and have had the great honor and pleasure of performing, recording and writing with amazing musicians and songwriters. I write in many different styles, both for myself and other artists, including R & B, folk, rock, pop, country and a mish-mash of other styles to form what I sometimes refer to as rhythm and folk. My musical influences include such artists as Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Patty Larkin, and many more too numerous to mention. I grew up in a house filled with music, listening to everything from Astrude Gilberto to Gilbert and Sullivan. All of my siblings are musical and either play, perform or teach music.
I connected with writing at an early age through poetry. While in high school I received a National Honor Society award for poetry, which was pretty amazing, since I was hardly the National Honor Society type. Writing poetry translated into lyrics for me once I picked up my brother's hollow-body Gibson. My first guitar, and still my favorite, is my Martin 000-18. It is incredibly sweet and has mellowed over the years; hopefully I’ve done the same. I learned to read and play music on the piano but by the mid 60’s was caught up in the experimental blend of pop and folk music, quickly becoming enthralled with open tunings on the guitar.
For several years I performed in the trio “Portrait” with my best friend, Steve Kippels, and my husband (and producer) Richard Grossman. Richard became more immersed in the production aspects of music, while I continued to write and perform either solo or in various bands, eventually leading my own band.
As a result of my performing, I was granted entrée into the world of broadcast and industrial voice-overs, jingles and on-camera work for nearly one hundred corporations and local businesses. A sample list includes, Radisson Hotels, 3M Corporation, Minnesota Public TV, Cost Cutters, Walmart (what was I thinking!), IDS/American Express, Phillips Brewing, Verducci Leather, Hormel and a slew of health care organizations such as Allina Health Care, HealtlhPartners, Hennepin County Foster Care, Mercy Medical Center, and Hazelden Treatment Center.
I’ve had the honor of opening for such renowned artists as jazz legend Mose Allison and blues great Corky Seigel. I have performed extensively throughout the Midwest and Pacific Northwest on college campuses and in coffee houses as well as historic clubs such as Charlotte’s Web and the Earl of Old Town in Chicago. Minneapolis area performances include the renowned Artist Quarter, Williams Pub, the Whole Coffee House and the original University of Minnesota West Bank haunts, the Extempore Coffeehouse and the Triangle Bar.
